Cutting Edge Diagnostics and Therapies

Digital Radiography

Millbrook Equine Veterinary Clinic has multiple digital radiography units that can be used on the farm to obtain high quality radiographs (x-rays) of our patients. These units enable us to capture images and then review them immediately.

Pro-Stride Therapy

Pro-Stride APS is a concentrated solution of cells, platelets, growth factors, and anti-inflammatory proteins. It is a product derived from the patient's own blood and can be processed in about 20 minutes on the farm immediately after collection from the horse. Pro-Stride has been clinically demonstrated to provide pain relief as far out as 52 weeks following a single injection and has fewer negative effects on the joint than traditional corticosteroid joint injections. Since the therapy uses the horse's own anti-inflammatory protein, there are no drug withholding times for competitors at the FEI and USEF levels.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy

PRP is a substance derived from the horse's own blood which is then injected into the area of injury. This is a simple, yet effective way to enhance healing of tendons and ligaments.

Digital Ultrasound

Millbrook Equine Veterinary Clinic has several ultrasound units used for a variety of diagnostic purposes including:

  • Reproductive ultrasound

  • Lameness work-ups

  • Therapeutic injections

  • Blood flow evaluations

  • Chest structure evaluations

  • Abdomen structure evaluations

  • Pneumonia evaluations

  • Late term pregnancy evaluations

Stem Cell Therapy

Stem cell therapy uses the horse's own stem cells for treatment of musculoskeletal disease. A sample of bone marrow is harvested from the sternum of the horse and sent to Dr. Nixon's laboratory at Cornell (http://www.vetcell.com/) where the cells are grown in tissue culture and multiplied, so that they are available in larger numbers for treatment. The harvesting procedure can be done at the farm under mild sedation. Following culture, the stem cells are shipped back to Millbrook Equine and injected directly into the area of concern. This treatment is helpful for a variety of conditions such as tendon and ligament injuries, osteoarthritis, and OCD lesions.

Lameness Locator

The Equinosis® Q with Lameness Locator® is a real-time, handheld, field-based system that enables a veterinarian to objectively measure lameness in horses with non-invasive inertial sensors. The Lameness Locator is especially useful for evaluating subtle performance problems and multiple-limb lamenesses. It is also helpful for evaluating the response to nerve blocks or lameness therapies.

Endoscopy & Gastroscopy

Millbrook Equine Veterinary Clinic has a 1 meter and a 3 meter endoscope for visualizing the upper airway, mouth, esophagus, and stomach.

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy

Extracorporeal shock wave therapy uses focused high-energy sound waves to treat a targeted area of injury. Horses with suspensory ligament desmitis, chronic back muscle soreness, and certain bony and soft tissue injuries can be helped with this therapy. In most cases, a series of several treatments are spaced at 2-3 week intervals to enhance healing and provide pain relief.
